Eat To Live [05 Sep 2008|12:57pm]

cheapvegan

[kmpls]
I just started Eat To Live this month. I know it is not a strict vegan diet, but it is one that vegans can use. Has anyone tried it who has tips on keeping costs down?

I am on day five. I have been eating lots of salads, soups, and smoothies/blended salads. I've also cut out coffee (for the time being).

The Republicans spent the last 3 days degrading, belittling and mocking the accomplishments of Senator Obama. They offered no ways to fix health care, create jobs, improve education or do anything but continue the failed policies of the last 8 years. Oh wait -- I forgot! They offered us a position on oil, "Drill Baby Drill". How thoughtful.

When they weren't mocking Obama with a sarcastic tongue --which reminds me of the Bush smear tactics-- they inspired fear. They told us the Republicans are the party who loves the USA and that the Democrats will not keep us safe. Which message do you prefer, hope or fear? I'll go with hope for a change.

They continued to lie about Senator Obama's record. They said he has no 'real accomplishments'. Here are a few:
1. Obama helped reform the death penalty in Illinois 2. Obama helped pass bipartisan legislation in Illinois that gave health care coverage to 154,000 citizens, 70,000 of which were children 3. Through bipartisan efforts Obama helped pass the Earned Income Tax Credit, giving over 100 million in tax-cuts to families across Illinois 4. Being a member of the Veterans Affairs Committee, Obama fought to help Illinois veterans receive disability pay 5. Obama played a critical role in passing the strongest Ethics legislation that has emerged from the US Congress.

They also said Obama will raise taxes, when in reality he would cut taxes for over 90% of Americans. Do Republicans love to lie?

The Republicans praised John McCain for being a maverick, putting his country first, having experience and being a solider. Well I've got news for you, America needs more than a solider. Furthermore, if he was a 'maverick' why did he pick a vice presidential candidate that rallies to the Republican base? If he puts his country first, why did he pick an inexperienced vice presidential candidate, who could potentially become President considering McCain's history of cancer and age? I'll tell you why: McCain picked who he thought would win him votes, not what would be best for our country.

Granted, McCain does have experience -- voting with George Bush 90% of the time. Experience doesn't count if it's on the wrong side of the issues.

Instead of experience, let's focus on judgement. Obama had the good judgement to oppose the Iraq War from the beginning, to push for a withdrawal of our troops (which is now, finally, echoed by the Bush Administration) and by his insistence to focus on Afghanistan, where the true threats to our nation reside. The only good judgment McCain has is on the troop surge. But that issue would not have been an issue if Obama had been commander-in-chief and not gone to Iraq in the first place. Good judgement from our commander-in-chief, from day one, is what we need for our country and that is exactly what Obama offers and McCain doesn't.

Now lets get to 20-month Governor, Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin who has even less experience than Barack Obama and Joe Biden. She preaches family values and abstinence-only education, but has a pregnant daughter. She slashed funding by more than 50% for special needs children in Alaska, but says those with special needs will have a friend in the White House. She left the town she was mayor 20 million dollars in debt. She is against abortion (ie: against women) and is under investigation for abuse of power. Yet she has the audacity to belittle and mock Obama being a community organizer early in his life. She's a sarcastic, condescending, belittling, joke. Simple as that.

Republicans can blame the media for 'unfair' treatment of Sarah Pailn, but that's a scapegoat. The media is just doing their job. Republicans, including Sarah Palin, told Hillary Clinton to stop "whining" about the media being "sexist". They said if she can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen. I guess they want it both ways!

The bottom line is, you have solutions or smears. You have hope or fear. You have more of the same or change.

Obama-Biden '08!

More Sarah Palin Commentary [04 Sep 2008|02:54pm]

liberal

[montanaisaleg]
With all the talk of how great Sarah Palin's speech was (and it was good at what it was meant to accomplish), there hasn't been much said about the ways it wasn't so good. It clearly rallied the republican base. The people in the arena with her loved the speech, and I imagine the people who still approve of GWB across the country loved it too. But even before all the post-speech hubbub, I wondered how it would play with people outside the repub base. First off, I doubt there will be many obama supporters swayed by her. She's too ideologically different, and obama supporters are, by and large, pretty well-entrenched in their support. So that leaves the undecideds - the moderates and the folks who don't really pay much attention until the step into the voting booth.

This does a good job of explaining my thoughts on the subject. The last line of the article sums it up well:
Ultimately, it's not that I don't think there aren't people who will find Palin's performance effective -- I just don't think there's much overlap between those people and the universe of persuadable voters.

Rallying the base was clearly necessary, but if it's at the cost of alienating moderates and people with serious Bush fatigue, Palin could still end up costing them votes. It's too early to tell if this will happen, but I think it's also too early to tell if she'll do anything more than whip up excitement among people who were likely to vote for McCain anyways. As one TV commentator put it (I'm paraphrasing): "It doesn't matter if the people voting for you are excited and happy if you only get 45% of the vote."

Quotes Karl Rove as saying he is impressed with Sarah Palin being mayor of the second biggest town in Alaska.
Quotes Karl Rove as mocking Tim Kaine, who was an option for Obama's VP pick, as not being mayor of a big enough town and that it would be a purely political choice that shows Obama is not concerned first and foremost with the person best capable of being President of the United States.

Quotes Bill O saying teen pregnancy is a private matter that should not be judged in the case of Sarah Palin.
Quotes Bill O saying the pregnancy of Jamie Lynn Spears is the fault of the parents and that they don't have control over their daughter.

Quotes Fox News Dick Morris as saying the sexism in society is so deep because of the attacks on Sarah Palin.
Then shows him saying this about Hillary Clinton:
"What happens when the boys in the Middle East or the boys who run Russia start picking on ya?"
"This is what Hillary always does when she's under fire, she's retreats behind the apron strings."

Then at the end it shows Sarah Palin saying this about sexism and Hillary Clinton:
"You've got to know what you're getting into....any kind of perceived whine about that excess criticism or a sharper microscope put on her...I think, man, that doesn't do us any good, women in politics, women in general, wanting to progress this country. I mean work harder, prove yourself to an even greater degree that you are capable...that you're going to be the best candidate."

Hey friends,

I am planning to go to Peru in several weeks, and I would stay there for at least a couple of months (with a host family) to volunteer in a small community.
If anyone here has traveled South America as a vegetarian, could you please share some wisdom?

Exit: Stage Left. [04 Sep 2008|10:18am]

liberal

[conceptualpete]
The door is open. You are welcome to leave. There is literally nothing to stop you.

A big portion of the left, a percentage that increases with a decrease in the median age of any particular cluster of liberals, desperately needs America to be the worst place on Earth. They need us to suck. They look forward to military death milestones and cringe at the idea of successful military campaigns. They want social programs that they don't like to fail. It's standard operating procedure - the desperate need to be right - whatever the cost.

The good ole boy Stars and Bars patriot is someone to be mocked. After all, patriotism is a quite silly concept. This, of course, always makes me wonder why these people continue to live in the United States, when obviously, every European country is a harmony of great healthcare, economic parody, and - of course - racial harmony. As an immigrant to the US, I share the same opinion that many immigrants have, pack your shit and leave - it's cheap. There are no excuses. You are not trying to save the system from within, you simply abhor being inconvenienced.

Every day you financially back a government that is corrupt beyond any possible resolution. As Osama told you, the blood is on your hands. So, leave, stop being baby killers with iPods and start being farmers for sustenance. The United States of America nationalizes more immigrants a year than the rest of the world combined. These people, like my family, often manage to take that trip with nothing to their names - so can you.

The reality is simple: your morality can not outpace your need for perpetual convenience. Millions of people, just like you, believe that the grass is greener on the other side of the fence. The difference is that they go check. The new generation liberal is so painfully misinformed about the rest of the world that one would think it rained fat free donuts in France, and that Healthcare in the UK was free, abundant, and of good quality. So please, take that field trip.

No excuses, it's easy. Cut some lawns, get your ticket, and go....

I just moved to a nice-ish neighborhood near St. Louis, and to my joy there's a bagel store two blocks away!  Went there last weekend and nothing, but tonight I lucked out.  (No pics, camera's not unpacked yet)

There were two bags FULL of bagels tonight.  I only took one (the easiest to reach), hope someone gets to the other.  There are currently 87 bagels spread out across my living room.  Yes, 87!  Half are plain/sesame seed, but there's at least a dozen onion, six chocolate, eight with cheese and either spinach or basil, and other assorteds.  Now to find space in my freezer for all these...

Several points:

1. It is disturbing to see how many people are so quick to adopt the talking points used by every media member (liberal or conservative) and try to pass it off as intelligent discourse. It almost seems as if nobody wants to bother looking into the issues, but instead just regurgitating what they hear Bill O'Reilly or Keith Olbermann or some blowhard with a talk show say. As a result, campaigns become less about issues, and more about out-of-context quotes and what the candidate's third cousin did in fifth grade back in 1974.

2. Socialism is the politico-economic theory of social organization advocating that the means of production, distribution, and exchange should be regulated or owned by the community. Don't use phrases to criticize someone when those phrases are nowhere near that person's ideology. If you want socialism, go to Europe. Likewise, fascism is a totalitarian nationalist political ideology and mass movement that is concerned with notions of cultural decline or decadence, and which seeks to achieve a millenarian national rebirth by exalting the nation or race, as well as promoting cults of unity, strength and purity. The Republican Party has far to go before it gets anywhere near fascism. Stop throwing around words like these when you don't know what they mean. The shameless labeling of one's opponent as something designed to evoke certain ideas is not contributing anything positive to the discussion, and only makes you look like a moron, regardless of which side you are on.

3. Yes, Obama's middle name is Hussein. Yes, McCain's middle name is Sidney. Get over it.

4. Making great speeches does not qualify you to be president. Neither does being a war hero. The only qualification for president is that you have to be at least 35, a natural born citizen, and have lived in this country for the past 14 years. Stop arguing that the other guy isn't qualified, because both guys are equally qualified.

5. Don't forget, anything that the candidate promises on the campaign trail is conditional on a Congress that will actually approve the proposal. So if you don't agree with something, vote for the local representatives who better comport to your believes. Both Obama and McCain are snake oil salesmen who have and will say anything to get a vote. The state and local levels is where your voice counts the most.

6. Stop saying you'll leave the country if so-and-so wins, because nobody believes you anymore. You didn't leave when Bush won both times, so stop whining. Politics is broken, and it's up to this generation to fix it. Just do something about it.

Good night, and good luck.

So I'm looking for some nutrient-dense meals that are pretty quick to cook. I'm an art student, meaning I'm broke and don't have a ton of time to cook, so I'd like to get the most out of the meals that I do eat.

So far, I've been sustaining myself on oatmeal, falafel, lentil stew, and various pasta/vegetable things. Oh, and coffee. =P Basically, I want something that's cheap, fast, and, most importantly, well-balanced.

Palin Supports Aerial Huntings [02 Sep 2008|08:58pm]

[xchaos93x]
Defenders of Wildlife Asks Judge to Shut Down Palin's Wolf Bounty Program
Bounty Law Repealed in 1984 – Alaska Does Not Have Regulatory Authority to Impose New Incentives

Anchorage, AK -- Today Defenders of Wildlife, the Alaska Wildlife Alliance and the Alaska Chapter of the Sierra Club asked the Alaska Superior Court to shut down Governor Palin's $150-per-wolf bounty program citing the fact that Alaska's bounty laws were repealed in 1984 and the State has no current legal authority to implement the bounties.

"The Governor is overstepping her legal authority by offering cash payments for each wolf killed by aerial gunners," stated Tom Banks, Defenders of Wildlife's Alaska Associate. "That's a bounty by anyone's standards regardless of what they call it.
"

Hoping to boost the number of wolves killed this year by permitees, Palin announced the state would pay $150 for each kill. According to an Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) news release, the bounty was instituted to "motivate permittees to redouble their efforts and to help offset the high cost of aviation fuel, ADF&G will offer cash payments to those who return biological specimens to the department." The state's press release, issued last Wednesday, indicates that "Permittees will be paid $150 when they bring in the left forelegs of wolves taken from any of several designated control areas.
"

"Governor Palin needs to take a close look at wildlife management practice in her state and restore the use of sound science," concludes Banks. "She said would heed the will of the public, but it's increasingly clear she's only listening to that segment that is willing to sacrifice Alaska's natural heritage for the benefit of a few.
"

The judge is expected to make a decision fairly quickly.

Defenders and the co-plaintiffs expressed an additional concern that the bounty offered by the State will encourage the illegal killing of wolves outside the control area.

Defenders of Wildlife is represented by Mike Frank of Trustees for Alaska, a public interest law firm, and Valerie Brown, an Anchorage attorney in private practice.

This video is graphic and brutal, so please be advised. But watch if you can.

We can't tell you how Republican vice presidential pick Sarah Palin would do on national defense, but when it comes to defending Alaska's right to shoot wolves, she's not afraid to pull the trigger.

Just ask Rep. George Miller.

Miller, D-Martinez, a member of the House Natural Resources Committee, introduced federal legislation last year to end Alaska's policy of allowing people to shoot wolves from airplanes - a practice used to keep the number of wolves in check so they don't eat all the state's moose and caribou.

Miller - who has strong support from environmental groups around the country - deemed the kills cruel and unnecessary to preserve the moose and caribou population. What's more, he said, they violate federal law banning airborne hunting.

Faster than you can cry wolf, Palin told the East Bay congressman and his Washington pals to butt out.

"Congressman Miller doesn't understand rural Alaska (and) doesn't comprehend wildlife management in the North," the Alaska governor said in a statement issued last September.

Miller is also clueless to the fact that game hunters rely on the moose and caribou "to put healthy food on their families' dinner tables," Palin said.

Miller, however, tells us there are plenty of moose and caribou for native Alaskans to hunt. He says his bill, still waiting to be heard in committee, is really about stopping the state from handing out licenses to sportsmen "in the name of predator control.
"

"Shooting wolves from airplanes probably doesn't look like a good deal to most Americans," he said.

Wolves aren't the only item on Palin's list. She's also taken on the federal government over polar bears, suing the Interior Department on Alaska's behalf in reaction to the feds' decision to list the animals as threatened.

She believes the listing will cripple oil and gas development in sensitive areas - and, in any case, says the enviro argument that global warming threatens to wipe out the polar bears' habitat is a crock.

In case you were wondering, Miller, who just returned from the Democratic National Convention, doesn't think much of Palin as a vice presidential candidate.

"I just don't get it," he says. "Her incredible lack of experience is serious.

Just when I think it can't get any worse [29 Aug 2008|07:23pm]

[roaming]
To follow is a statement by Rodger Schlickeisen, president of Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund.*

Senator John McCain just announced his choice for running mate: Governor Sarah Palin of Alaska. As a Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund supporter, you are no doubt aware of Governor Palin’s dismal record, from her staunch support for special interests and Big Oil to her terrible assault on wolves and other wildlife.

As much of the nation wonders just who Sarah Palin is, I wanted to pass along my statement that I've just released.

“Senator McCain’s choice for a running mate is beyond belief. By choosing Sarah Palin, McCain has clearly made a decision to continue the Bush legacy of destructive environmental policies.

Sarah Palin, whose husband works for BP (formerly British Petroleum), has repeatedly put special interests first when it comes to the environment. In her scant two years as governor, she has lobbied aggressively to open up the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to drilling, pushed for more drilling off of Alaska’s coasts, and put special interests above science. Ms. Palin has made it clear through her actions that she is unwilling to do even as much as the Bush administration to address the impacts of global warming. Her most recent effort has been to sue the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to remove the polar bear from the endangered species list, putting Big Oil before sound science. As unbelievable as this may sound, this actually puts her to the right of the Bush administration.

This is Senator McCain’s first significant choice in building his executive team and it’s a bad one. It has to raise serious doubts in the minds of voters about John McCain’s commitment to conservation, to addressing the impacts of global warming and to ensuring our country ends its dependency on oil.”

###

*The Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund provides a powerful voice in Washington to Americans who value our conservation heritage. Through grassroots lobbying, issue advocacy and political campaigns, the Action Fund champions those laws and lawmakers that protect wildlife and wild places while working against those that do them harm.

I watched a show on Iraqi people, it was on LINKtv. A guy named Abu mentioned that he would leave Iraq if he only could get a passport. Abu had a job which was to fix all the generators. People in Iraq need generators ever since their infrastructure has been so damaged from the war. So Abu says he can't leave Iraq, why is that? Didn't the American press make a big deal about freeing the Iraqi people from Saddam and allowing them to travel, which never was before? Yet now they have put in place the same type of Sadam era restrictions, or even worse? What is the deal with not letting Iraqi people leave, since we have "freed" them from Saddam? It appears that most of this is from the US government policy towards passports. What kind of hypocrisy is this?? Is this how we bring FREEDOM to iraq?
I LOVE MY COUNTRY BUT FEAR MY GOVERNMENT!

ABU HUSSEIN (Translation): But they told us Bremer’s law says, you can’t sue foreign companies for killing Iraqis. That’s the country for you and that is all I have to say. That’s the state of your country and government, you are Iraqi in name only. If they granted us approval now we would not stay in Iraq another single day, if they gave us passports and visas, we would go to another country.

http://www.journeyman.tv/?lid=59073&tmpl=transcript

Another example:
Amal al-Rubei, a retired Iraqi teacher, 56, has been living in Jordan since 2003, but she is unable to visit her son in Britain.
She said: "I have a family in London, I need to go the UK, my son is expecting his first baby, and I also need to do some medical check-ups.

"The British embassy does not recognise my S-type passport. They told me that they have nothing to do with it, it is the Iraqi authorities who told them not to acknowledge the S-type passport."
Some Iraqis are risking the dangerous journey to Baghdad simply to get a valid passport.

McCain's decision to pick Palin in order to woo HRC supporters, is a hit and a miss.

Look at the numbers and weep (or cheer)

A new CNN/Opinion Research poll released today shows that he contest between Barack Obama and John McCain -- after the twin "bounces" of the past few days -- remains essentially tied, with Obama leading at 49% to 48%. But what's most intriguing are the results regarding McCain's choice for veep, who was expected to draw more women to his side.

In fact, men seem to be more impressed with this move than women.

Just now, this seems to be confirmed by a CBS poll released late this afternoon, showing Obama with a 48% to 40% lead overall -- but with a wide lead among women, at 50% to 36%, which has only widened. Only 13% of women said they might be more likely to vote for McCain because of Palin, with 11% saying they are now less likely.

CBS also reports: "Before the Democratic convention, McCain enjoyed a 12-point advantage with independent voters, but now Obama leads among this group 43 percent to 37 percent....The poll shows an increase in the number of Obama voters who are enthusiastic about him."

As for the CNN poll: "Women now appear slightly more likely to vote for Obama than they did a week ago, 53 percent now, compared to 50 percent," reports Keating Holland, CNN's director of pollling. "But McCain picked up a couple of points among men. More important, McCain solidified his party's base with the Palin selection, dropping Obama's share of the Republican vote six points to just 5 percent now. The Palin selection did not help among women -- that may come later -- but it did appeal to Republican loyalists."

Men have a slightly favorably opinion of Palin than women -- 41 percent vs. 36 percent. "If McCain was hoping to boost his share of the women's vote, it didn't work," Holland said.

The survey was conducted Friday through Sunday, after the conclusion of the Democratic convention and McCain's selection of Palin.

And USA Today/Gallup has just released it's post-Palin poll showing that Obama has widened his lead from four points to 50% - 43%.

so I have on thing to ask, if McCain picked this woman as his VP only as a political move, what does that say about his slogan about "putting country first?"

I mean honestly, do any of republicans truly believe that she is THE most qualified individual to be a heartbeat away from the presidency and second in command of helping to run the country? there was nobody more qualified?

Everyone is talking about how this is McCain's first test of judgment as commander in chief. Do you think that McCain is "putting our country first?" or just putting his own self interest and ambitions first?

how could he pass up Pawlenty, Romeny, Jindal, or even Huckabee for God's sake for Palin?

McCain is showing poor judgement that's in line with Bush's judgement.

is Palin going to be McCain's Harriet Miers?
